Carat, a word with Arab origin, is the unit for the weight of a diamond. In ancient times people took the dried carob seeds in order to balance scales. Later carat was determined metrically on 0.2 gram.
A carat consists of 100 points, 142 carat are an ounce. Designations such as half-carats and carats do not refer to the accurate weight. It is divided rather into the following groups:
- quarter-carats 0.23 - 0.26 ct
- half-carats 0.47 - 0.53 ct
- three-quarter-carat 0.72 - 0.76 ct
- carats 0.95 - 1.03 ct
